Link formal learning with practical application

How many well educated people have you met that have caused you to wonder, "Where did you get your degrees from, a cereal packet?". Too often people separate what they learn in formal programs from what they are currently doing.

In fact many people can't even see the connection between their studies, what they are currently doing (current full time/part-time work, volunteering, social and sporting activities) and how they all connect with what the person desires to do in their future.

This conspires to create under-performance. People then hold the view that education is 'all academic' and there is no way to apply the theory in a practical sense (By the way, such a statement is a theory itself!). Sound familiar?

This is why we encourage people to apply what they are learning now in whatever ways possible. Sure, some of the theories that you are learning cannot be immediately applied, but a great deal of what you are learning now can and should be applied in your life right now.

When you discover the critical skills that really matter in each stage of your life and career and you have clarified your desired future (whether for yourself, team or organisation) it is amazing how powerfully you can practice what you are learning.
